Cryptozoology – Moth man

Today’s Cryptid is the Moth man. The Moth man is a bipedal, winged humanoid that looks more like an owl than a moth. Its colour varies in the darker shades of black, gray, and brown and stands approximately seven feet tall with a wingspan of 10 to 15 feet with a flying speed of one hundred mph. He is sometimes recorded as having no head but two glowing red eyes in the chest area. The details of the facial area have never been accurately recorded. The one witness who did see the Moth man’s face said they were horrible, monstrous, and left her frightened and having recurring nightmares. The Moth man folds his wings and walks with a shuffle and when he flies unfolds them and shoots up at incredible speed, then levels out to go to where he wishes. Moth man has never been reported as having flapped his wings at all. His movements are compared to the flight capabilities of a helicopter. The favourite trick of Moth man is to chase cars, fly in front of them and even sometimes hit the roof.

The Moth man was first sighted Clendenin, West Virginia on November 12, 1966, by five men digging a grave in the cemetery. The Moth man has been sighted in many places across Virginia and the surrounding states but mainly around the old West Virginia Ordnance Works. The old West Virginia Ordinance Works is an abandoned munitions building that dates back to World War 2. There are stories that the chemical seepage into the water there contributed to the creation of many mutations in wildlife and that the Moth man is one of those mutations.

The sighting occurred for thirteen months over one hundred times in Point Pleasant, culminating in the collapse of the Silver Bridge on December 15, 1967. After this, many disasters in the area were foreshadowed with the appearance of the Moth man. The Men in Black harassed any witnesses afterwards. Hmmmm, interesting. Too many questions, not enough answers. Keep alert and stay safe.

Love and light,

Druid Jess

  1. Mothman is one of my favorite cryptids to read about. Thank you for keeping his story alive. I think someday we will know the truth about this being.
